Entertainment Book: To Buy Or Not To Buy? ...Buy Today.

That is the question.  I have purchased the Entertainment Book many times, sometimes to get good deals and sometimes to support the organization selling the books.  A couple years ago I finally did the analysis to find out whether or not I was actually saving money by spending money on the book.  I kept track of each time I used a coupon from the book and marked down how much money I felt that coupon saved me - which in my eyes is totally different than the menu price of a free item.  I subtracted the price of the book from all my savings...and it came out to be a total wash!

Here are a few questions to ask yourself if you are pondering the idea of purchasing one:
  1. Does your local book have restaurants that you like?
  2. Do you like to try new restaurants?
  3. Is there a charitable organization that you want to support that sells this book?
  4. Do you understand that owning the book might cause you to go out to eat more and that you might actually spend more money out of pocket?
If you've decided on YES, today's not a bad day to pull the trigger.  The WILD (Web's Incredible Limited Deals) offer over at ShopAtHome today is 50% cash back on Entertainment Books (was 20%).  There is free shipping on the books as well.  If your local book is priced at $35 online, I've noticed that charitable organizations will charge $30 and there might be extra bonus coupons on the front cover.  $17.50 can't be beat, though, unless you wait a few months.

You Won't Feel Gilty About Buying These Halloween Costumes

Gilt Groupe is a free members-only website that gives you instant access to today’s top designer labels at up to 60% off.  Some of the items they offer are still quite pricey, even at 60% off.  Thankfully, they have some items whose price tags are only have two digits to the left of the decimal place.  Right now they have some adorable Halloween costumes on sale.  Here are just a couple that I love:

$20 is better than you're going to get at most of those Halloween stores that pop up in strip malls this time of year.  You do have to pay shipping, which is $5.95.

Gilt Groupe has a fantastic referral program.  If friends that you invite via an email or referral link sign up and purchase an item, you receive $25 into your Gilt account (!!).  Taking advantage of this can make shopping through Gilt Groupe very thrifty....just what we all want to hear, right??

I know what you are thinking...
"There are tons of Birthday Freebie lists out there, so why are you creating your own and reinventing the wheel?"
Well this is the real Birthday Freebie list - the list that only contains full-fledged FREE birthday gifts.  Who wants a birthday gift that has strings attached, anyway?

Top Awards:

  • Gigi's Cupcakes

  • The Container Store
    • A coupon  is emailed to you for a free gift that you can redeem any time during your birthday month.  Internet rumblings seem to indicate that it is a free The Container Store reusable bag.  How I signed up for this is a mystery to me.

  • Noodles & Co
    • Receive a free bowl of noodles via an email sent to your inbox 5 days before your birthday.  You have until 9 days after your birthday to use it.  Sign up for Noodlegrams to get this tasty treat.  Make sure to order the large bowl with a protein to get the most out of your free birthday meal! ($7.50 value)

  • Sonic
    • Choose between free medium Tots, a regular CreamSlush Treat, or a medium drink.  The Happy Birthday email provides a link to print one of these three coupons.  The email is sent on your birthday and you have one month from the date you print the coupon to enjoy the treat of your choice.  To get in on this deal, sign up for the Sonic Cruisers Club.
  • Caribou Coffee
    • Receive an email one week before your birthday that you can print and redeem for a free drink (any kind, any size!) at any Caribou Coffee.  The only bummer is that the offer is valid only ON your birthday.  Create an online account and be sure to enter your birthdate information to receive this treat.

Holiday Greeting Cards

Do you love sending holiday cards but hate the cost involved?  Here are a few ideas of how to lower the cost of Christmas cards so that you can still reach out to family and friends across the country.

When you see a killer (a.k.a. free or practically free) deal on photo cards on sites such as TinyPrints and Snapfish, snatch them up...even if you don't have the perfect family photo yet.  Here is an example card from TinyPrints with a photo.
Here is that same card as it would appear if you do not select a photo to add to the card.  You can easily add a photo at a later date.

Target has printable coupons on their website for 20 free 4x6 prints from time to time, including right now.  Create a collage to fit 4 smaller photos per print and you can get 80 free pictures to add to your holiday card designs, which should be enough to cover your holiday card needs for the year.  If you've got some thick tape, that adds dimension to the cards and makes them look very spiffy!

If you've got leftover cards, you can use them again next year (or in a few years).  There are often deals on these photo cards on sites like TinyPrints and Snapfish.  Just because you don't have your family pictures ready to do doesn't mean you can't act on these deals.

Also think about purchasing photo postcards.  The pricing of these don't seem to be as good as they should be (considering they don't include envelopes), but you can't deny the money saved by using a postcard stamp!

If you've got digitally savvy friends and family, a great option is to send an electronic holiday card.  Last year I went through the steps of creating a Christmas card through a photo card site and then took a screen shot of the card in preview mode.  I sent out an email to my local friends with the holiday card as an attachment.  It was a great way to wish them a happy holiday...for free!  I still used the blank photo card idea above to send cards to family and friends that I do not see often so I could write them a more personalized handwritten note.

Go get your feelers out for great holiday greeting card deals...it's not too early!

It's A Woot Off

It's a WHAT off?  It's a Woot off!

For all you Woot-aholics out there, today is what you live for - a Woot off!  Woot is typically a deal-a-day site that sells a single item until it is out of stock or the end of the day, whichever happens first.  During Woot offs, a single item is offered until an undisclosed amount (usually a relatively small amount) of them are sold, and then another item is offered.  It is a fast paced day that reveals many deals...if you are smart about when to buy and when to hold off.  You can easily get caught up in the fun of it all and buy something you later regret.  This fast paced scenario does not allow you much time to be practical consumer, but you just might find something you never knew you needed!

Today's shirt is pretty funny, if you ask me.  The shirt is called "Comparing Apples to Oranges".

It is not too early to start thinking about Christmas gifts...

I Luv Free Diapers, Do You?

Luvs currently has a "Diapers for a Year" Sweepstakes going on.  Six super lucky mothers (or fathers or grandparents..) will win a supply of diapers to last 365 days.  For the next six months, starting in September, there is a drawing to award one person with free diapers in the form of free-product coupons that expire 6/30/2013. Check out the Offical Rules for all the nitty-gritty.

If you have little ones in diapers, are pregnant, or know someone who could use them, consider entering this sweepstakes - you can't win if you don't enter!
